DEPARTMENT FOR CURRICULUM MANAGEMENT AND E-LEARNING
Call for Submission of Italian Culture Textbook
The Department of Curriculum Management and e-Learning within the
Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education intends to introduce
a textbook for the teaching of Italian Culture in the Secondary Sector
of State Schools.
The Director of the Department of Curriculum Management and e-Learning
invites authors, publishers and book distributors to submit one copy of
Italian culture textbook for evaluation purposes. Books submitted under
this call should be accompanied by a quotation covering quantity price.
Books submitted for review have to satisfy the following criteria:
1. Be in conformity with the principles, objectives and general
guidelines of the National Minimum Curriculum (Education Division,
1999).
2. Cover all areas of study in the 2008-2009 syllabus for the Secondary
Education Certificate Examination (SECE) as set by the MATSEC Board
(University of Malta).
3. Is meant for use by students who follow the Italian course of study
covered in Forms 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 in both Area Secondary Schools and
Junior Lyceums. For this reason, the texts should ideally be aimed at
pre-adolescents and adolescents taking the said course.
4. Moreover, textbooks must:
i. cover a course of units with the aim of developing the cognitive,
affective, and especially social and cultural skills of students taking
Italian;
ii. include various graded activities which enhance the harmonic
development of the basic skills in language learning, i.e. listening,
speaking, reading and writing;
iii. present the right equilibrium between graded elements which enhance
the communicative, linguistic and inter-cultural competences in the
development of language skills;
iv. treat as wide a spectrum of Italian culture as possible and include
various authentic texts which encourage reflection of the elements which
make up the culture of the Italian language thus enhancing the students’
ability to learn in an autonomous manner;
v. contain a wide range of colour graphics and/or photographs dealing
with everyday situations and which motivate students of Italian to
develop their inter-cultural competences;
vi. be accompanied by a teacher’s manual;
vii. be accompanied by a cassette or, preferably, a CD aimed at the
development of aural and oral skills;
viii. be accompanied by a relative website so that students can make
references to it and practise what they learn through modern ICT.
Interested parties are to note that if textbook is not currently
available, a letter showing interest to provide the said textbook for
evaluation will be accepted provided that the book reaches the Textbook
Selection Board within a reasonable time after the closing date shown
hereunder.
