COSMOS WIND QUINTET IN
CONCERT AT AUBERGE DE CASTILLE
The Malta Arts
Festival 2009 is proud to welcome on its concert
platform The Cosmos Wind Quintet, with a
concert of contemporary masterpieces for wind
quintet. The concert will be held on Saturday 4th
July at the Auberge de Castille Courtyard,
Valletta at 20:30hrs.
The programme opens with a much requested
reprieve of the “Trois Pieces Breves” by Jacques
Ibert. Guest Bass Clarinettist Allison Hughes
then joins the Cosmos in a rare performance of
Janacek’s Mladi. Alison Hughes is completing her
term as sub principal clarinet with the Malta
Philharmonic Orchestra and this will be one of
her final performances on the island.
Cosmos will then present the “Six Bagatelles for
Woodwind Quintet” by the enigmatic Hungarian
composer, Gyorgy Ligeti. The event will conclude
with a tribute to Malta’s celebrated and much
missed composer Charles Camilleri. His “Picasso
Set” of dance movements was written in Canada in
the 1960’s and displays much of the humour which
characterizes his woodwind writing.
Members of the Cosmos Quintet are; Rebecca Hall,
who has served for thirteen years as Principal
Flute of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra; John
Mcdonough, who currently holds the Principal
Oboe position with the same ensemble; Godfrey
Mifsud is Professor of Clarinet at the Johann
Strauss School as well as the University of
Malta; Bassoonist Ulrike Buhlmann combines
freelance work in both Malta and her native
Germany; Jose Garcia Guttierrez is Principal
Horn of the Spanish National Radio and
Television Orchestra.
